Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) is a public body created by the Governments of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in 2002. It aims to promote Catalan language and culture by raising the international profile of its producers, promoting artistic and cultural exchanges, and providing support for the study of Catalan language and culture at university level.
The Institut's work is divided into three main departments promoting the visual arts, architecture, film, circus, dance, music and theatre (the Performing & Visual Arts Department); literature and thought in Catalan (the Literature & Humanities Department); and Catalan studies in academia (the Language & Universities Department).
The IRL main offices are based in Barcelona and Palma. It also has four offices abroad in London, Berlin, Paris and New York.
