Sound artist Kaffe Matthews is looking for people who want to sing in her new project The lock shift songs - a sonic artwork and installation specially created for IF: Milton Keynes International Festival.
Award-winning sound artist and composer Kaffe Matthews is creating The lock shift songs, a new sonic installation commissioned by the Canal & River Trust and IF: Milton Keynes International Festival 2014.
The installation will premiere at the Festival and run for the entire 10 days (18 - 27 July). Inspired by the Grand Union Canal - which connects London and Milton Keynes - the development of the piece will engage waterway communities and canal users, workers and volunteers based in the Trust’s Milton Keynes head office as well as a choir made up of singers from the local community.
In a week-long walk along the Grand Union from her studio in London to Milton Keynes, Kaffe has been gathering underwater sounds and stories from fishermen, canal workers and passers-by she encounters on her journey. Then, using these and also data about canal water life and water quality, she will write songs and create a composition that will play between three ‘sonic beds’ that people can lie in.
These sonic beds play music through the body, not just through the ears, to create an immersive and sensory experience for visitors that sees sound gliding, rushing and hovering, with songs rising, falling and disappearing beneath and around the body.
Taking Part in The lock shift songs . . . Kaffe is looking for singers - ideally based in Milton Keynes - who would like to be part of a choir who will sing the songs she has created for The lock shift songs. After rehearsals, the songs will be recorded and then played in the sonic beds as a key part of the installation.
So whether you are young or older, with or without experience you are welcome to join in. Kaffe is keen to assemble a choir that includes all voices - elderly, young, male, female, children and young people, high, low and in between.
Professional singers, amateurs and those with absolutely no experience are all very welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
Rehearsals and Recording: Interested singers are invited to gather at Milton Keynes Arts Centre, Parklands, Milton Keynes, MK14 5DZ on Wednesday 7 May and Thursday 15 May from 6pm - 8.30pm for vocal warm-ups and rehearsals.
Recordings will take place on Saturday 17 May 2014 at St Andrews Church, Parklands, Great Linford, MK14 5AU (next to Milton Keynes Arts Centre) from 12 noon - 4pm. Refreshments will be provided.
A special boat trip on the Grand Union Canal is being planned for choir participants - details to be confirmed.
